DEFENDERS Assistant Controller in INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana
The Assistant Controller is responsible for the preparation and distribution of financial statements under the supervision of the Controller/Director of Accounting. This person will be responsible for identifying and preventing discrepancies, setting up control systems and ensuring accurate financial reporting. The Assistant Controller should be organized, have good knowledge of accounting principles and a great eye for detail.
Direct DEFENDERS day-to-day accounting operations including the execution of operational accounting policy, general ledger responsibilities, AR/AP, fixed assets, inventory and other accounting activities
Prepare journal entries, financial statements and reconciliations for month-end close
Review financial data monthly identifying discrepancies/problem areas and communicate those findings in a clear and effective manner.
Lead projects and initiatives, often with high visibility and broad impacts, to advance the short and long-term financial goals of DEFENDERS
Lead and work collaboratively with others to build cross-departmental alignment and relationships
Update and maintain SOP’s for month-end close
Prepare month-end variance reporting for G & A and balance sheet accounts
Prepare quarterly reporting for banks and Board of Directors
Maintain fixed assets sub ledger
Prepare analysis and provide recommendations on reserve balances and relative inputs
Assist with quarterly debt compliance
Work with Controller and CFO on special projects and requests for data
Lead annual external audit
Effectively mentor, coach and manage the day-to-day activities of the Accounting department including AR and AP
Assist in Treasury efforts of the Company, including banking relationships, long-term debt financing activities (including compliance with existing debt covenants)
Interface with outside auditors to address accounting issues as well as oversight of the preparation and coordination of the year-end audit.
Present month-end financial packet to executive team and influence executives to take actions on financial risk areas
Effectively communicate status of reserves, ongoing projects and potential opportunities to the Controller/Director of Accounting.
Ensure that corporate accounting policies and procedures are documented and compliant with financial reporting and internal control standards
Analyze and communicate monthly variances vs. budget and vs. forecast
Collaborate with other departments to understand and support strategic initiatives while assessing the accounting impacts
BS in Accounting/Finance
5+ years of accounting experience
Advanced Excel and spreadsheet skills – pivot tables, v-lookups, complex equations and conditional formatting.
Experience with Great Plains is a plus
SQL experience is preferred buy not required
Public accounting experience preferred.
